Well?

I saw about a dozen wood ducks throughout the morning. Each group wanted into a frozen pond and that's the ONLY place they were going to put down. It was great to get out again.

Saw 3 ducks - marsh was frozen. No shots. Quite at 9. Worst opener in, well, probably ever

How far south are you DR. How cold did you guys get last night?
23 degrees here this morning when I got up. Supposed to be 65 next week. Ended up with a few birds. Not near as many as there usually is around at this point though.

Dayton. It was in the upper 20s when I went out but barely made it into the mid 30s yesterday so that pond won't open up soon. I could have broken ice and will if I need to next time I go out. They generally like the spot I was in but not yesterday.

My youngest son(12) and I went yesterday. We had 5 woodies come in at about mach-2 at legal. He missed twice. We had a group of 4 mallards, then pairs till 8:00-ish. He killed 2 greenheads. Not the best shooting in the world, but he shot 12-14 times.
We were on a pond, with only a SMALL hole of open water. I never in my wildest would have believed it would have frozen that much. They were close, like 20' CLOSE. Too close for him. Not sure what to do next time, in such a situation.
All told we had the 5 woodies and 12 mallets in the decoys. He should have had a pile, but he still had fun.
Things are looking to open back up, in the mid 60's by mid-week.

Well what? 5 man limit of mallards and some bonus geese.

I have better pics but never post background on OW. Something I learned from master wu...too many sneakies he says. I trust his advice.

Def. one thing I can agree with after what we have seen from out of towners the past couple years!!

We snuck in right before the warmup.. Sunday morn's 22 degrees made for some dumb mallards.
Chase's going solo for his first greenhead. His Uncle Bob was proud:

Wcfb1: I too take heed to master wu's sage advice on pics, unless it's yur own driveway.

Never seen geese do it so well in all my years hunting. These birds did it right not a one over 25 yards. What we thought would be mostly ducks turned out to be mostly geese. 18 geese 13 ducks. Now got to find some more.
