Mat and I thought we had it made this morning. Got in the woods at 5:30. I thought I saw a turkey roosted over a creek but was'nt sure. At 6:10 I knew. The tom gobbled, along with 3 others all within 60 yards. The closest was 40 yards or less. I thought we might be too close.

I only tree called twice back to back real soft. The closest looked around and kept gobbling. After 10 more minutes and almost none stop gobbling from 4 toms(they were hot!) they quit. The closest started to cluck looking around for about 3 -4 minutes. He then walked a limb.

I knew something was up, but I thought the neighboring landowner was sneaking up on his side in a field.

Next thing a shot rings out right beside us, then another, and another.! Turkeys were flying over us and Mat and I heard a loud thud.

I got Mat to head to the field while I crossed the creek. I told Mat to kept the person in the field. I got to the field and Mat and the other person was talking. I asked if he liked shooting turkeys out of trees and he replied one was attempting to start flying. I said bull---.

Well, we had a few words, then my other buddy and his seven year old daughter was coming across the field from about 300 yards away.

The poacher grab his turkey and scooted through the creek bottom. Mat and the others got my equipment while I ran to the truck, drove around the mile and got the license number.

He did the same thing last Saturday on the rainy morning. I heard a shot at 6:50 thinking tree shooter, got the truck discription but the person was still in the woods an hour later. Then I thought coyote. In my mind I knew the turkeys were not on the ground that early and a lousy morning.

I did notify the Game Warden and we have a meeting Monday.

Three witnesses, possibly 4 counting a seven year old, should present a good case. It is our words against the poachers, but quit a lot of evidence.

The main complaint is we had two youths, Mat at 15, and my buddy's daughter, trying to raise them right and respectful and this idiot is out there showing them everything wrong.

What do you all think?? I am ready to burn his rear in court even if I lose a days pay.

The Game Warden and I took a trip back to the treeshooter site yesterday afternoon. I showed him what I knew and saw, then we found a pile of feathers directly below a horizontal limb on a roost tree about one foot from

a nice pile of turkey droppings. Looks like the bird dropped straight down. When I described the shooter and the truck the Game Warden immediately

told me his name. he busted him a few years back on a deer tag violation.

He is going to put the heat on now. Time will tell.

I hunted the same spot this morning just to see if any birds re -roosted there by now and never heard a gobble in the whole mile. It sure is a screwed up

roost site because of one idiot trying to prove how good of turkey hunter he is.

Checked another old spot and there are two gobblers still lefted where we youth hunted. Going to try it tommorrow.

Tim Thompson is the ODOW officer in Vinton County.....at least that is wht we have been told by the district?!?!

We have had vandalism, poaching and trespassing issues that were reported to both the county sherrif and ODOW officer. They never respond to our calls!

Last fall someone stretched 1/4" stranded steel cable across roads and ATV trails on our property which fortunately didn't hurt anyone but damaged a truck and flipped an ATV rider. I called both and gave my cell number and asked them to visit and file a report.....no one even returned my call!!!

In Vinton County it seems poaching, trespassing and vandalism is acceptable to these people. I'm loosing respect for the ODOW in this county!

My first day ever turkey hunting, I was hunting with a buddy. Someone shot a turkey out of a tree at about 50 yards from our position. Since I was completely new to turkey hunting I didn't realize exactly what happened until we got a chance to talk about it later. I'm glad we were set up with our backs against trees [he was behind us] never saw him and he never called us off. My hat is off to you for pursuing the matter.

It may be frustrating, but you are doing the right thing, and a service to all ethical hunters.

Mike

I know lawrence county is also bad about poaching, id imagine that vinton county would be the same. They are the two most heavily forested counties in ohio and are over 75 % forested. Thats too much land for one man to cover. Ive talked to the GW before and its not that he doesnt know its going on he just physically cant do much about that much poaching. It is almost a way of life down here sadly.
