Anybody been steelhead fishing lately? I know the weather has been dictating the water level and clarity. I'm new at the whole steelhead fishing thing and am always looking for advise. If anybody is having luck, what are you using, where, and when? I'm planning on going out this weekend, and any help would be great!

Dneal25,
I am not expert but water levels and color are key to fishing for Steelies with any hopes of success. http://water.usgs.gov/cgi-bin/waterwatch?map_type=real&state=oh is a web link to see the flow gauges. click on the chagrin river - the flow needs to be at or below 400fps or on the Grand around 1000 fps - for the rivers to be fishable.
I only use fly fishing tackle. 10ft 7wt is perfect for this fish. most people drift egg or sucker spawn patter also woolybugger and bead headed nymphs.

Last week before the big snow - all of the rivers were really heatin up. with the chagrin flow at 890fps it might be fishable late on Saturday but for sure on Sunday if it does not rain.

Make your drifts in the deeper hole just before or after the shallow rocky areas. the flies or lures need to be on the bottom. a lot of males will hang out at the bottom end of the shallow waiting for a chance to spawn. those fish can be aggressive. it is though to catch fish while they are trying to spawn.....nothing on there minds except one thing.

hope this helps
I went out saturday morning to the grand river upon advise from a friend. He told me to go to the hogback ridge, but I went to the wrong place. I only had a couple of hours so I quit around 10:00am. When I realized I was at the wrong spot, I was determined to find hogback ridge. So I found it and walked down to the river without my pole just to check it out. There were fish everywhere and enough guys to match them!

I went to Wooster saturday night after the the Medina County DU Banquet. I fished for a short while sunday morning with my noodle rod for crappie. I used a pink rooster tail and ended up catching a 22" 6 lb. large mouth.. I must say that with that 10' pole, It was an amazing fight. I wasn't expecting the bass to be hitting this early, but they must be hungry!
