Who has a 3 1/2" remington. What choke constriction works best for you with 3.5" steel shells/hevi-shot. I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to get a patternmaster or similar choke or just buy a knockoff aftermarket in an improved modified or so. I like about as tight a choke as I can get.

In my Sx2 I was a huge improved modified fan. I'm going to pattern my factorys this weekend and see where I need to go from there. I'm just hoping I can cheat and not buy a few chokes before I find the right one.

If you stick with the Hevi loads under 1350 fps., factory chokes should work OK for all but the longest ranged shots. An extended choke may improve patterns for longer ranged shooting. You won't need as tight of a constriction with Hevi as you used with steel.

CODB,

Since you stated that "you like as tight a choke as you can get" You will just have to put your factory chokes on paper with what ever shell(s) you decide on buying. If your factory chokes aren't tight enough then you will have to decide which aftermarket choke you want. As Tripple B stated, the Terror chokes are good ones. I shoot mostly TM Impact with a 3" Hevi for third shot thru a Briley Extended Imp Mod which does well on birds 35-50 yds. When I shot steel exclusively, I never used anything tighter than my factory Modified and kept my shooting within 45 yds with my 12 gauge.

Scauper

Watch the barrel length on the SX2. I have a 26" barrel and the extended brileys do nothing for my patterns. I have to stay away from 3.5" shells at least in BB right now. If I stick to 3" I get excellent 40 yrd Patterns with fast or slow loads. Around 70% which suits my decoying needs perfectly.

I think trible b said that the extended brileys work in the SX2/browning invector plus barrels if they are 28"

Brian

With high velocity steel loads, I've had better luck with getting good patterns from longer barreled guns than with the shorter ones. I noticed a little deterioration in patterning quality when using shot barreled guns and lead turkey loads, but the difference is so small, that it could simply be due to the natural differences from gun to gun. But when I tried getting good patterns out of my 24" barreled BPS12 and my 26" barreled Novas, I had a heck of a time getting anything better than about 65% at 40 yards until I got my Terror chokes for them. The odd thing was that they each patterned lead shot loads very well. I found it hard to believe they performed so poorly with fast steel loads.

It's one of those things where you just have to try your gun, choke and loads and see if they are compatible with each other. Some short barreled guns will pattern well, but I have seen enough that didn't that I stay away from them in a waterfowling gun where fast steel shot will be used.

My SX2 and my 11-87 super mag are both 28" barrels. I personally think they are better balanced for me and swing better.
