Anyone going to have birds available this year and the cost. Got a pup and wanted to know what to expect on price of birds or if it it would be cost effective for me to build a pen and order chicks.

I contract several hundred chukars a year for our field trials and dog training each year. Birds have been plentiful this season, and have run around 6.50-7.50 per bird. Huns have been available, but are at almost pheasant like prices. How old is the pup? Can you trap some pigeons? There are several propagators located around the state. Here's a link to pheasant chicks. Friends who buy and raise chicks constantly worried about mortality issues. Nothing like walking out to the brooder pen and finding 100 dead birds laying toes up.

Check with John Wagner, Wagner's Gamebirds, near Upper Sandusky, 419-294-4896 or Bill Oman, Lone Oak Shooting Preserve, near Delaware, 740-363-7219. You can also call Division of Wildlife District Offices and get a list of commercial propagators in each of the districts.
