When do you introduce the pup to gun fire??? I introduces Sprig to gun fire this morning and he done a great job, except, he wanted to head in the direct of the where the gunfire was echoing off of a woods then we realized that that the gun needed to be pointing in the opposite direction. After that He was on the game. he made 6 100 yard retrieves with like he had been doing it all summer Hopefully he will be ready to go on the 1st of September. So back to the question, did I introduce the gun to soon?? and is it possible to rush things? DD

It is natural for the dog to react to the direction of the echo. He will learn that the mark is more important than the sound of the gun. He will also become more confident in your positioning than the echo. Jim

Do not let money be the problem. If you would like to spend a day with me, all you need to do is schedule it and take the drive. I need to make a living, but it is common knowledge with all my clients and friends that not being able to aford my fees is not a reason for me not to share the gift that God has blessed me with. I have some clients that can barely afford dog food, forget about training fees. Jim

Matt, I am trying to train sprig by one of the books and DVD's I have He's a quick learner, it's just I have to remember he is still a pup We started the gun fire at about 100 yds and yesterday evening we progressed up to about 15 to 20 yds before we ran out of daylight. He was looking in the directions of the gun fire and was watching the dokken go up and come down. the only problem he had last yesterday was wanting to break at the site of the dokken in the air. that is the next thing to work on. I guess it's time to bring out the traffic lead and use it to hold him. I have been told to get a pinch collar but I don't see a need for it, yet.

As for doubles we only done that once. and it was to see if he would do it. Ijust hope I can have him ready to go on sept 1st for the doves and maybe teal if I can find any

Jim, if I can find a weekend and the money for the 10 hour trip, I'll take you up on that offer. DD,

There are tons of good retriever folks around you. You should not have to resort to DVD's and books. The West Central Ohio Hunting Retriever Club is very close to you. I urge you to contact President Dale Schock at (937)256-1723 or [email protected] (remove #1 from address). Tell him Kevin Fitz-Gerald referred you, and that you have a young retriever, and that you like to get together with some club members for some training. If you have trouble getting him, let me know.

You are about 2 hours south of me, but you are welcome to come up and train with Jack and I. We have a great public dog training area 1/2 mile from my house that is open 365 days a year. Just let me know.
