Hey guys... so far this season has been good... not alot of gobbling but we've been seeing birds everytime out... but still no meat on the table. I had my dad intown last weekend from PA to hunt with me. It's the first time we have had an opportunity to hunt together for a couple years so, it was nice to get out with him. Anyway...

We setup on a corner of a woods next to a grass field. We put 2 hen decoys out in the field. I sat on the corner and he said he was going to go down the woods edge 40 yards or so and watch the inside of the woods. At 7AM I heard dad shoot... I got up and headed his direction figuring I'd see a floppying turkey (he doesn't miss very often). Well, he missed. He didn't notice the branch that was in front of the 2 jakes he was shooting at. Now for my question... all this happend on Sunday. Should I go back in and setup close to where he was on Saturday? Or do you think those birds have high tailed it out of there?

I had an opportunity at a bird late in the morning on Sunday... he came in range after shooting time.... had to let him walk.

Thanks,

Brad

OOOOOOYEAH.......I'd go back and you'll more than likely find there will be birds there too!

I've hunted areas year after year that produce birds and have killed a tom one week only to find another moved into the area the next week. The birds you find may or maynot be the same group but there is a reason they like that area and keep returning.

those birds don't have a clue as to what happened so
i would say you would be alright going right back to
that spot and setting up

i have seen video of two guys out hunting one calling for the other
they call in three birds 1st guy kills his bird, they switch, so now the guy
who was calling has the gun, five minutes later they call the other two birds
in and the 2nd guy kills his bird

I agree with cooly........I've hunted with two shooters before and called in 3 birds.....one guy shot the tom and the jakes flew across the field.....I kept calling the two jakes returned and the other guy killed a jake while the 1st kill was still "flappin".

Last year I hunted a flooded beaver pond area where several jakes and toms were frequenting. One morning it sonded like 15 birds were in the bottom and I set up just above them on a bench and started talkin.....here came a gobble and I dropped the hammer.....six birds ran. 5-6 more flew maybe 50 yards and set down looking back at their brother floppin! I continued calling just to see what they would do and four of the biggest toms started struttin in my direction......they came within 35 yards of my position before I finally got tired of playing with them! Here's the ugly part of that story....went back to the same spot the next day with a guy who had never shot a turkey before and couldn't get those toms to gobble! I know they were in there we roosted them that evening but for some reason they were tight lipped and we didn't tag anything that morning!

Thanks guys... I'm going to go in and setup in the same area with a little bit of an adjustment... now that I know where they're coming from. I'll let you know how it works out. At this point... I'm going to bust a jake if I get the opportunity.

Brad

Sounds like another typically frustrating weekend on the public area we know well, if that's where you were. That area has been a dissapointment this year. Very quiet.

Good luck on your fishing trip.

Dan

Dan - It was public land but probably not the WLA you are thinking of. Have you killed your birds? I heard rumor that Roger took two jakes.

Brad

Taken one so far. Finally found a desperate 2 yr. old yesterday.

Has been a tough season for the most part.

Rumor about Roger is true. If he is settling for Jakes you know the hunting is tough here this year.
