Early Season discussion

I think we'll be alright for doves for the opener. Temps still in mid-eighties today. A couple of seasons ago we had that horrible Nor'easter blow in like 2 days before the opener with night time temps almost hitting the 40's. We lost all our birds in a two day spell. I read reports of a WMA down around the Dayton/Sprinfield area hosting an estimated 50,000 doves for that particular opener. I further believe we should have some action for teal on Saturday with the NW winds predicted for Thursday and Friday. Perhaps we can get a report from anyone already camped out at Metzger!

to be honest with ya, im more excited about cooler weather coming just so im not sweating my nuts off sang huntin the first two days of september. Doubt ill go after doves. will definitely be after honkers saturday.

So I went to my usual opening day dove area to see how they were flying. It's a cattle pasture where they feed corn. Plus they always have cut silage fields. Well there weren't very many dove to be honest. Both the pasture and the cut corn only had enough so one guy might get a limit. So on my way home I took some other back roads. I'm driving down the road in BFE, and I happen on the mother load of dove feeding in a cut wear field that was replanted with a second crop of beans. Well with the drought we had the beans are pretty thin, but the doves weren't. The best partwas, the farmer/ owner was on his tractor across the street from the field. I introduced myself and asked to hunt. He said, sure you can, let me sign your permission slip. I thanked him a bunch and was on my way. Cant wait for the morning.

What a great morning. Cool with s slight northerly breeze. The birds didn't disappoint us this am, but our shooting did. Lol. We had a 2 man limit by 8. The dogs did a good job, a little rusty but they picked it back up pretty quick. Going to hit it again in the am.

exactly!

we haven't been seeing any numbers. rather disappointing with all the work we put in this year.

We had another good morning this morning, three more limits. Not as fast as yesterday but still a quality outing.
