How old should my golden pup be before I start using an E-collar? Does it matter if you start using a deadfowl dummie first with the pup, or should you just start off with a small bumper first till he gets used to it?

Do not consider a collar at this point. Use a small bumper until he/she is consistantly picking up and delivering. Switch to different types and materials of bumpers as soon as you can. Variety is good. In my personal opinion, the deadfowl trainer is not needed. If you want to buy one, it is just another bumper. If you have access to real birds, introduce right away. I recommend that you get a copy of the tape "Sound Beginnings". It is the best retriever puppy "training" video ever made. Should come standard with every working retriever pup sold.
