Have unit 16 on Friday and am looking for a report from Magee? Ice report? Have about a two hour trip, just making sure we're not froze out.

Any info is appreciated!
Thx.
Tom

you wont be froze out but, certainly you will have some ice to deal with....if you have a V bottom boat with a gas motor you should be good to go...you have a pretty decent boat ride down the main channel to get to your actual zone....if you do have significant ice it will start right at the pull off where the main channel and your path to the actual blind meet...if so, consider tossing out a few blocks right there at first light and tuck the boat in the buck brush....you will have a good chance of knockin' down a couple birds, then weigh your options from there.....should be a good number of new birds around.

I was there maybe 20 years ago with temps in the single digits and things largely frozen, My dad and I drew blind 1 which at the time was a pit blind. We had a small pocket about 60 yards from the blind that 6 coots were keeping open. So I broke open a hole and put out the decoys and come first light the festivities began. We ended up bringing 7 birds home but it should have been more! Most blinds didn't shoot any but there were big flocks heading south from the lake and we managed to get our share to come around. Lost one bird even though there was a blood trail on the ice because it was time to go. One of the best days of duck hunting I ever had with my dad who died earlier this year at 92 years of age.

Broke some ice in the main channel on the way to 16. Had thick ice in the buck brush but the majority of our hole was wide open. It was extremely windy and unfortunately the only slack water was directly in front of the blind. Ended up with one drake mallard and a black duck. Missed a group of gadwalls. Not many birds wanted in our hole. Saw a few flocks early and they really didn’t start to filter back until after 11. Saw most small groups from 11 to 1. Pretty dead from 9-11. Quite a few geese but they know the safe zones and stuck close to them. Blind 9 was the only other group out and they had a way more shooting than us. Good luck!!

I'm inclined not to hunt state areas, because I can usually do better anywhere else. But I've been invited to hunt magee Friday. It's one of the better blinds they have as a general rule. Waiting to see if they ok my vacation day at work. I like hunting a marsh setting with all the other wildlife in the area. Its supposed to be windy in the AM, that should help.

My son and I have #16 this coming Wednesday the 16th, so let me know how it goes. I've got an aluminum V bottom and a Carstens Canvasback i could take. Probably leaning toward the aluminum V if there will be skim ice. As far as birds go....you don't know until you try! I enjoy the process and time with my kid....birds are a bonus! Nothing like sunrise in the marsh!

We hunted number 6 today, ended up with 4. Should of had at least 2 more. Blind 5 had 1 volley, dropped 1. Blind 2 hadn't fired a shot by the time we left at 130. Did hear 2 volleys from middle marsh area.8, 9, 16 area. It was a very nice morning if you weren't duck hunting. What little wind we had, died quickly. Sunny all day long. We got our limit of swans easily. Man they sure make a racket.
